Having just attended Dreamforce the previous day, I appreciated the intimacy of this conference. The sessions were packed with great information, but the setting was informal, so it was easy to get answers to questions. The speakers—mostly Epic program and product managers and engineers — were open and accessible. Like most App Orchard partners, we are still in information gathering mode, but what we heard at the conference will definitely help us advise customers interested in building Epic apps.
Reflecting back on the event, here are a few of my major takeaways:. Kit overlays the data warehouse Kit and Caboodle — get it? Similarly, Epic is committed to its growing library of APIs that are keys to unlock Epic logic and patient records. The App Orchard launched earlier in the year with 15 apps. Since then, Epic has been building out the infrastructure and processes required to support partners and developers.
The number of App Orchard partners grows monthly, and Epic is investing in more support staff and more test environments to enable the review and approval of many more apps over time. Epic told attendees to expect rigorous technical reviews during the approval process. App Orchard partners will need to have detailed plans and resources for ongoing maintenance and support of deployed apps.
Front-end skills and knowledge of java-script and web services are a solid profile for would-be Epic app developers. Epic will host ongoing developer events and training programs, but for now, there are no App Orchard-specific certifications required. Our work family is separated right now.

Any requests for non-Caboodle data are sent to the Clarity reporting team or requested as additional tables in Caboodle if they are expected to be requested frequently.
Caboodle can also accept external data sources. Do you have non-Epic billing software? Export it into Caboodle and report on it there! Is there a data sharing agreement with another organization? Use Caboodle to merge the two data streams into a single combined data repository. The most straightforward method of adding additional data to Caboodle is to add new columns to existing tables.
You will need to work with Epic support if you intend to modify the core Caboodle tables without limiting your ability to implement future Caboodle updates. Sometimes a table needs to be repurposed and new records need to be added.
Your DispenseMedFactExt was originally for internal dispenses, but now you want to include external pharmacy dispenses. Make sure you have the same granularity in your new code. Is it one row per dispense, per attempted dispense, or per ordered dispense? When possible, match your identification scheme with the original loads to the table.
This will make it difficult to identify which load added the records but will make linking to the table much simpler. Creating a companion table is the most common form of extension. If your reporting requires additional fields using the same grain as existing table, then a companion table is a good choice. In this scenario, you can create a Dimension table extension or a Fact table extension to go along with the original.
The new table should have companion records for each record in the original table, but the new table contains different attribute columns. Over the past year, I worked on extensions for adding a phone number to a patient demographics table, including social worker in surgical case table and adding a claim submission count column to a financial transaction table. Suppose that your Caboodle database is working well, but now you want to add more functionality.
Prioritize the important fields and try to keep your data model simple while meeting the needs of the report. Focus on ease of use instead of database normalization: consolidate external tables as they come into Caboodle in order to reduce reporting complexity.
It contains all the information for the table and can be referenced by the database architect to build the table. Future modifications to a table are easier to handle with a design document as a trusted reference. A good way to explain your new table to future developers is to generate an entity-relationship diagram that shows how the new tables link to each other and the existing structure. In this example, PatientDimension is an existing table with a new column being added.
LocationDimension is an existing table with a new load added for infused departments. Caboodle is a useful tool for improving developer efficiency when creating reports.
By extending Caboodle strategically, your organization can fulfill many data requests using Caboodle and still have the option to report from Clarity as needed. Bluetree, leveraging information and lessons learned from Providence St.

In the world of Epic founder and CEO Judy Faulkner, where creating new technology meets with a delight for words, was a productive and rewarding year.
Sonnet, she said, is the smaller poem. She describes Sonnet, which is now in development, as Epic technology with some of the features removed. Both will provide a path toward upgrading to the full product. The two new versions of Epic in development can provide a pathway to adding all the features at a later time. Faulkner seems to relish her work and is buoyed by it. Is there any time when it becomes a grind? However, there are rewards — for example, knowing that there are so many drug-to-drug interactions — a quarter million — averted through Epic system alerts.
Yes, Epic EHR installations are known to cost millions of dollars. But, Faulkner has done the math and created charts. For Faulkner, was a very good year, indeed. From June through December, family members from around the world visited her and her husband in Madison, she engaged in work she loved, and she was often inspired.
